Cleanup Toolbox
Cleaning up is easy! But there are a few tools that can make it fun and popular too! We'll be building this page out as we go along to include the basic tools for creating great cleanup activities.
Come back often to see the new tools! Don't forget to include the #itsinthebag hashtag on your social media posts so that we can share in your beautiful work. |
Cleanup Safety
We can have fun and create safe cleanups! For example prepare a safety speech and ask volunteers sign a release form confirming that they know the risks and how to stay safe. Rule One: If you don't feel safe, don't pick it up!
Create Your Cleanup Activities
What does an It’s in the Bag cleanup activity look like? How many people need to participate? How often do you need to cleanup your territory? Look inside for easy answers.

Create a Cleanup Dream Team
It’s always best to begin at the beginning and note your current all-stars. Who already cleans up with you? Next look around to acknowledge the other teams who may be active in your territory. You want to list everyone who is cleaning up so that you can better work together and see who is missing.
What's in Your Cleanup Bag?
There are so many reasons to track the trash. Tracking the types of trash helps you plan for future cleanups and make your case for support from funders, sponsors and volunteers.
|
Stake Out Your Territory
Stake out your boundaries, research the history of trash in your territory, and decide in advance what is going to make you feel successful in year one, year two and year three. This gives you manageable expectations creating a sustainable program.

Survey the Trash
Now you are in the field, on the ground hunting for clues as to where the trash is, what it is, why is it where you found it, who may have participated in getting it there, who may volunteer to get it out, how much trash is in your territory and more.
