Dear Friend
Does this sound familiar?

• You complete scores of grant applications…but you rarely get the grant. Or you never even hear about the grant until some other organization brags that they just got it. People talk about foundations, but you've never seen one. Sponsors? How do you get sponsors to fund your organization and the events?

• You're sick and tired of funders and donors telling you you’re the "best-kept" secret. When you first heard it, you were flattered. Now you're just plain irritated. Worse, you're STILL the best-kept secret despite all your best efforts to change that. You need to increase your funding, but you just don't know how to ask for it.

• Every time you speak you get lots of rave reviews…but no volunteers. Worse yet, the volunteers you have now get lured away to cleanup other water bodies with other organizations.

• Your cleanup is designed around annual and biannual events. If you aren't working an event, you aren't making a difference. As much as you may love the events, you're don't like the trashy water body between events. You'd love to stop cleaning the waterway and shoreline and catch the trash before it gets to the river – not just to free up your time but so you won't be vulnerable to the rains that push trash off the streets and into the water.

• You’re frustrated that you haven't made as BIG of a difference in the world with your expertise (as you know you should) because, despite your best efforts, the shoreline is still littered with trash because you’re “playing small.” What do you need to do to start playing the bigger game you know you're meant to play? To stop the "rain of trash" down your waterway and into the ocean.

• You've put EVERYTHING you have into your clean up events and now you can't figure out how to get someone else to take over. You've done all the hard work? Why do folks keep trashing the river, and why is it harder and harder to get people to show up to clean up? So how are other people doing it?

I've got GREAT news for you - you are SO in the right place right now!

This course is for you if you want to get maximum effect with no more wasted time. This is for you if you want to be confident and prepared when you speak to the community and to potential funders and donors about trash and how your organization is saving the day for future generations. This is for you if you want to be recognized as the leaders and experts on trash by City Hall and the Environmental Community. This is for you if you want to get the grant and foundation funding that you deserve. This is for you if you want a steady stream of quality volunteers ready to activate year round.

This is for you if you’re tired of feeling like the best kept secret. You want to make a difference while doing what you love. If you’re just tired of reinventing the wheel.

My name is BJ Smith and I am the Marine Cleanup Whisperer. Why? Because cleanup organizers like you need support in getting the big funding and qualified volunteer base you deserve.

Last fall as I was taking a walk down the main street in Trenton NJ, I started to see so much trash that I hadn't noticed before. So I decided to go back to the house, pick up a bag and at least clean the street in front of my house. No sooner that I started, did I pick up a wad of bills. I looked around but didn't see anybody who could have dropped them. Then as I looked closer, I noticed that they were weathered from being in the street for a few days. That day my promise to become the Marine Cleanup Whisperer brought in $75! I want to show you some easier and more secure ways to raise funding for your organization.

I didn't start in non profit business or public service. Shortly after Hurricane Katrina made a strong glancing blow on my home town of Mobile Alabama and a dead on hit to Coastal Mississippi, I decided to work in the recovery efforts. When I was a child I could remember the devastation along the Mississippi Coast after Hurricane Camile and I knew that everyone's help was needed. I was sent out as a technical asset to assist recovering communities who were short on personnel.  I worked with community groups to start non-profits, housing and redevelopment task forces, green-ways/blue-ways and even redesigned a municipal finance program to help a  community make attract and keep more grant funding.

The municipal work was a painful shift for me because my business background had not prepared me for the slow pace of democracy and consensus. And until I got the hang of community planning it was harshly in my face slowing progress at every turn. In order to become better at this democratic pace and not lose any more time, I started studying and soon became a certified floodplain manager (to understanding waterfront planning), a volunteer wrangler (they are not just free employees) and a grant administrator (to make sure we attracted the right kind of funding and kept it).

Along the way, I went to a SeaGrant Bays and Bayous symposium and was moved by the passion and joy of the presenters and the attendees. It made me want to find out what was happening with my own community's urban river. Just days later, I joined the Dog River Clearwater Revival, a longstanding nonprofit dedicated to cleaning up our urban river and began a journey that led me to understand the myriad ways of managing the flow of trash from the land to the sea. In time I became President of the nonprofit for a year and like most of you, I have organized and managed trash cleanup events and picked up a lot of trash. But it became obvious that there were better ways to manage the trash.

Many of you took the time to participate in our online survey developed and managed by Eric Echol's Water Words That Work (WWTW) Team. At the time that we released the survey, Eric and his team were hoping that we’d get 75 responses. Wow, pat yourselves on the back! 54 of you had completed the survey within the first 4 hours! And 361 of you took the survey within the two weeks that it was open. We were all amazed and truly heartened at the response to cleaning up our waterways!

In the survey, we asked you to rank your top ten cleanup concerns, and they were:
  1. How to get more sponsors and fundraising,
  2. How to recruit more quality volunteers, and
  3. How to develop better cleanup plans.

You also wanted your training delivered fast and cheap. Before the survey I was convinced that I needed to work one on one coaching with each cleanup committee. While it is still a great way to work with large and diverse organizations who are developing a brand new program, your survey comments showed me that many of you can work very well in a classroom setting learning alongside your peers.

So I took the results of WWTW survey and split the 8 Weeks to a Cleaner Shoreline course into three classes (WATER, CLEAN and TRASH), that you can take  alongside folks just like you who want to take their cleanups to the next level. I call the first course W.A.T.E.R.TM

So how do you sleuth your shoreline and water body to begin finding the wealth of resources that belong to you. Now this treasure hunting is a big topic to cover and in my class we’ll spend a week on this. In the teleseminar, I taught you all that I could and I promised to show where to get more. Well here is how to get more.

How to position yourself so that funding comes to you effortlessly – pull out your sword of truth because so much funding will be coming at you that you’ll need to be choosy. Not all money is equal, some is more work than it’s worth. Have you ever been talked into the car of your dreams only to find that it didn't fit your lifestyle at the moment? Well the reason that we find ourselves buying the wrong thing or accepting less than we deserve, is that we haven't taken the time to really understand our true needs and desires. This is all the more important when we are a part of a family, business, or community group. What one person wants, may at first appear contrary to the wants of the others in the group. And consensus sounds like watered down joy for everybody. But I will teach you to use consensus to build an incredibly powerful fundraising campaign.

And I promised to show you how to take what you learned in the tele-seminar and turn it into a long and lasting transformation in your community and your beautiful water body. How to attract quality volunteers like honey draws flies. How your own Trash Blasting Master Cleanup PlanTM can be used as a catalyst and catalog to bring in the exact funding that you need when you need it.

W.A.T.E.R. The Trash Blasting Master Cleanup Planning System TM
Five Steps to Creating Trash Blasting Strategies to Build Powerful Fundraising Campaigns and Attract Quality Volunteers, All While Doing More of What You Love.

You're about to learn my clear, PROVEN, 5-STEP system which teaches you EXACTLY how to make a Trash Blasting Master Cleanup PlanTM, in the comfort of your home ... FAST.
Classes starting September 2014. All lectures are recorded for easy listening.

Whether you're a newbie at this or a veteran in marine debris cleanup, working together you'll discover strategies and tips designed to help you create a cleaner water body even after drenching rains have flushed out the storm sewers. Start by following my W.A.T.E.R.TM system to begin seeing results in YOUR water body and shoreline.

Here’s just a SAMPLING of what you’ll discover when you dig into this system:

Session 1. W is for Who, What, When, Where, and Why

Picture
Are you stepping over funding and resources inside your current organization? Is there a quiet giant within your midst? Most people have never sat down and gotten real with where they have been, what the organization is doing, who is already in the organization.

This is especially true of an older organization, unless you have an historian, you may have forgotten why the group was originally formed or that you have a Senator or Council person or just somebody who gives the social elite big hair. There is gold in you midst, start your mining there.

You’ll have coursework to get you started. There is no need to work alone, put together an  ad hock planning committee and go over your board and membership rosters. Has anyone ever called on members to see if they want to give more? I always gave $25. Year after year. Why? Because we only had two membership levels: single $25 and family $45. No one ever asked me for more money.

Trash Blasting Master Cleanup Planning will give you and others in the organization all the information to quickly complete any grant or foundation application. And this is where you make sure that you are doing more of what you love.

“It's strange how a plan can unfold sometimes—an umbrella shooting up at the touch of a button and extending out in all directions quickly, effortlessly.” ― Elissa Janine Hoole, Kiss the Morning Star

Session 2. A stands for Assess Your Community, Shoreline and Water Body

Picture
So now you know who you are, and you know who you aren’t. You know the gaps in your organization. Learn how to use those gaps, to choose the best funding and resources for your organization.

Learn how to become a resource and funding detective. Assessing your community, your shoreline and your water body will get you working on who else is in your area and what’s in it for them (WII FM). Clean water means different things to different people. We can be motivated by property values, a call to good stewardship, service to God, love of the environment, clean drinking water, and on and on. The WATER class lets you work online with other participants and organizations to learn from their discoveries.

Pull out your maps, drive the neighborhoods, get into your boats, and start looking for even more gold! Have a contest in your organization to see how many different reasons you can find for keeping the community clean of trash. Make it a contest for finding the hotbed of new volunteers, members and sponsors. You don’t have to approach them yet, but you want to start taking names!

"If you can dream it, you can do it!" ― Walt Disney

Session 3. T is for Trash, Trash, and More Trash

Picture
Become a citizen scientist and start outlining your baseline trash surveys. And where there is trash there is treasure. And I do mean treasure. All those drink cups and hamburger wrappers made somebody a pretty penny at the source. Those folks will make great partners in cleaning up the water body.

Find the facts to support your work. Work like detectives and track the trash through the water body and the community. I got a call last week from someone who was shocked to find a massive pile of water bottles trapped behind some newly downed trees in a creek. The community knew the creek was conveying trash from the local outlet malls to the Gulf of Mexico, but until the trees fell and made a dam, they didn’t think they could prove it. Well the drink cups and plastic water bottles are so thick that tires now sit on top of them.

Learn this crucial strategy: Where you find the trash, you will find the resources to stop the trash! For example did you know that crime statistics are lower in clean communities; some thirty years ago, NYC lowered crime rates by repairing broken windows. Why? It showed that someone was watching! Someone was interested. Also petty crimes like littering are the best place to stop the escalation to major crimes. When you track trash back to a shopping mall, remind the owners of this. Draw the link from littering to shop lifting. Offer to bring them into the brainstorming on ways to keep the parking lot clean and increase their sales.

All the way through your planning process you are thinking about the why’s and who’s of funding and volunteerism. You are beginning to get an idea as to how much it’s going to cost to keep your waterway clean. How much support can you leverage from other organizations? The trash is going to give you a lot of answers. You are building the plan and you are designing a plan that fits your lifestyle.

Session 4. E is for Evaluate Alternatives, Brainstorm Solutions

Picture
This is where the rubber meets the road in the world of collaborative leadership. Learn this skill and you are likely to see a raise in your paycheck and a promotion at work. Every one of your cleanup committee members is going to have an opinion on how to clean the river and where the greatest opportunities lie and who in the community you go after first and on and on and on. And you absolutely want to encourage everyone especially the quiet ones.

Learn how to create cleanup activities around your lifestyle. Because if you don't love the work, then you won't be able to convince others to join you in the work. And frankly, you won't do the work either.

Learn how to get every one of those alternatives, of those ideas on the table and documented and learn the secret to getting the group to make strong lasting decisions. Have you ever left something out because you didn’t think it was important or feasible, then it came back around to bite you in the backside. There are important guides for making decisions that stick. You may have to work through several before you reach a solid consensus. And once again, this part of the process will help you with your career, your relationships, and your family. This experience is definitely transferable!

Many of you wanted to know how to build and manage large projects. Taking a group from brainstorming to consensus is the first step to success.

“In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable.” ― Dwight D. Eisenhower
“Plans are of little importance, but planning is essential.” ― Winston Churchill

Session 5. R stands for Report Out to Your Members, Affiliates and Community and start reeling in the funding and volunteers!

Picture
You are at the finish line. You have been completing your worksheets weekly. You have photos, lists, maps, decision trees, brainstorming maps, and more. You not only have a plan, but a group of people dedicated to its success. Learn how to turn your W.A.T.E.R. Trash Blasting Master Cleanup Plan into a powerful fundraising and quality volunteer recruitment tool by building out your marketing plan. Turn your Master Plan into a Fundraising Catalog.

Now you are ready to have a master plan launch fiesta and convert 100% of exactly the RIGHT PEOPLE . And the best thing is that there are no surprises. All along the way you and your committee have been talking to people and groups and businesses. You’ve dialed back the blame and talked about the bonuses of a clean community. You toned down the anger, and built strong relationships. You are no longer the shrill nitpicker or the angry hot head, but the person offering specialized location based solutions and clean water for future generations.

I’ll bet that you’ve even made some new friends along the way because you reached out to them and solicited their opinion. You aren’t the folks who can only talk about trash and make people pick up trash. You are the organization that all the funders want and the volunteers crave. You are now beginning to control local program development.

“What are you waiting for? How long will you keep waiting? Don’t sit back and wait for life to happen to you.
Have a plan and take the needed steps to create what you want.”

So now you may be wondering, "BJ, how EXACTLY are you going to teach me to..."
  • To find the gold in my current organization,

  • To empower every member of my organization to search for funding and quality volunteers

  • To find the funding to create the programs that allow me to do more of what I love

  • To turn trash hunts into treasure hunts (turning the litterbugs into funding sources)

  • And to create fact based baselines that demonstrate quality use of funding, volunteers, and progress

  • ...All so that I can enjoy consistent and sustainable clean water results and the ability to get out there and make a difference for future generations?''

Valid question!

Here's my answer...

I've designed this training to go much deeper than one of those "in-a-box" info products that gets you all excited and then leaves you alone to struggle your way through finding the time and the focus to get going. Sorry, I care too much to do that to you.

I'm going to hold your hand all the way through this one. It's not okay with me for you to do anything but maximize your fund raising and your ability to clean up your water body and shoreline from your investment here.

Here are the SPECIFICS of how we're going to do this in the next class:

You'll be sent an invitation to join our exclusive online forum, where we'll post a schedule of all live trainings, recordings of the calls, additional video training, transcripts, worksheets, sample planning material and more. You don't have to make the live calls, they will be recorded and posted on the online forum.

So now you're probably wondering, "What's this going to cost me?"

Here it is plain and simple. I'm practical. And I like to consider the worst case scenario when making any decision. So I did that for you!

I don't have to sit here and tell you that the Trash Blasting Master Cleanup Planning WATER System alone is easily worth $997.

I'm not going to compare it to the cost of having Starbucks every day or that it's less than one expensive name-brand purse or pair of designer shoes. I won't go into the cost of a new pair of golf clubs or green fees. Or the depressed land values in a trashed out neighborhood.

I think you're already doing the math in your head and you can see that if you followed my proven formula, even if you are a total newbie with shoreline and water body cleanup events, for less than a hundred dollars per funding source , you'd only have to find 8 to 10 small funders or donors to justify this investment.

Yes, 8 to 10 donations at the $80 - $100 price point would justify you making this investment in monetizing your clean water mission.

And let's face it, most of you will be offering donation packages in the $500 to $1,000 range by the time I am finished with you.

So given that, it would be ridiculous for me to go into a long rant about the value of what you have access to here.

So here it is, I have laid out what I think would be a worst case scenario for you. My worst case scenario rant....

EVEN if you don't get all the details into the first iteration of your Trash Blasting Master Cleanup Plan, EVEN if you BOMB and only make the plan to cover 75% of your watershed, you'll STILL have access to enough funding sources to make your investment back. Also you will find this training invaluable in your career and personal relationships.

How can you lose? (Unless you DON'T sign up and continue all alone and unorganized to struggle making little or no impact on your trash strewn shoreline and water body.)

Are you ready to FINALLY start seeing some REAL funding in your organization?

A.  Soon after you register, you'll receive an email with the homework for Session One, so you can get started with this work right away! And a week or so before the class starts, you'll have access to the Online Forum and can start asking questions.

You're going to be invited to 5 LIVE training calls and 1 LIVE bonus Q&A call. If you miss one of these live calls, you'll still be able to catch up with the recordings and the transcripts later. And you can ask your questions in the online forum.

Take the W.A.T.E.R. course now and if you feel that you need a refresher, you can come back and join in any W.A.T.E.R. course being offered within a year of your course ending, FREE of charge. That gives you more chances to work through the material with me and in a dynamic group setting!

Q. Can several people from our organization work together under one class fee?

A. Absolutely, yes! But to keep from tying up the forum and the Q&A calls, you need to elect a spokesperson/leader who will represent the group.

Q. WHO is this training best for?

A. This method works especially well for cleanup leaders who are making a difference; like heart-centered independents , agents of change supporting cleanup organizations, coaches, and consultants.  The training is great for newbies and veterans. The information is not USA specific, it works for any place on planet earth!

I'll show you EXACTLY how to raise money with your expertise, be welcomed in your community as an expert, while you create a a beautiful shoreline and water body and move away from 'the fear of the next rain of trash ... FAST

If you're one of the many people who puts everything into keeping the water clean and now you’re trying to figure out how to get the funding support you deserve or you’re exhausted from having to lead every cleanup event and you KNOW it’s time for others to take a leadership role, this is EXACTLY the training you've been looking for.

Q. Is it tax deductible?

A.  Tax advice should always be confirmed by a qualified source. But in my experience, if you are working with a USA 501.c.3 certified non-profit firm (or an equivalent in another country), then you may want to consider paying for the course yourself while you can take advantage of the scholarship. Then if it is OK with the non-profit, you trade the receipt for a donation slip, effectively making a $497 (or $997 without the scholarship) donation to your clean water non-profit.

Q. How is this different from your other trainings?

A. This is a great question. Each of my trainings covers an essential piece of the puzzle you need to have in place if you want to build a sustainable, successful cleanup organization that lets you love your life while also making a difference:

  1. WATER
  2. CLEAN
  3. TRASH

Q. I’m so tired of false promises. Will this really work?

A. No false promises here. In fact, the only promise I can make you is that if you don't find a successful mentor you resonate with who can show you a strategy to get your work out into the watershed, you will likely find yourself on endless free calls, constantly “evaluating” your next step. Success comes from taking ACTION. Imperfect as it may be, you committing to a strategy and taking action is the secret sauce to getting your message of clean water out to the community.

Q. How much will you teach about Fundraising and Grantsmanship?

A. I'm so glad you asked! The entire course is geared toward locating the best matches for your organization and then positioning your organization so that businesses, foundations and granting organizations literally come looking for you. You provide a service that they want, need, and desire. I will teach you how to be the solution they have been searching for. And how to know when you are not what they are looking for!

Q. My organization is small and doesn't have a large territory, and I'm not convinced I can get people to support it, especially since people are strapped right now and don't seem to care about the trash.

A. I get this question a lot. And you’ll be happy to know that YES, master planning works just as powerfully for small organizations and single event organizers as it does for large organizations and clean communities. Really!

And while many people are "strapped for money," you will see that they will part with the money they have to solve a pain they are tired of. I see it all the time. People say they can't afford something to one person, and then turn around and buy a $300 purse or take a trip to Vegas. It's all about people's priorities, and I will show you how to speak about clean water so that people will understand just why they need it for themselves and future generations.

If you want your prospective funders and volunteers to start taking decisive action and investing in your programs, you need to do the same! Join me and get started on trash blasting your water body and getting the funding and respect that you deserve...
